Critique of Web 2.0 Design

Tyson Collins writes a well articulated critique of the problems associated with web sites designed under the ‘Web 2.0′ banner, the latest (and pretty undefined) phenomenon to dominate the Net.

What do you think?

Web 2.0?
Web 2.0 is the latest web design “trend.” The cliche and standard look of a “Web 2.0 compliant” website is one with eccentric color schemes, large fonts, dynamic content , gradients, and reflections. Unfortunately, it has one major feature – lack of content. Every single stereotypical Web 2.0 compliant design I have seen doesn’t focus on content at all. Most of these designs simply exist to serve one purpose – to be pretty and appreciated only for that.

Problems
These designs stress aesthetics over usability and presentation of content. This is by far the biggest problem associated with this craze. Have you noticed that all of the sites with extremely high traffic focus on content? The same problems existed in the Flash template craze. Not one of these designs focused on content. They weren’t able to present content in an effective way! This functionality simply did not exist. A website exists for the sole purpose of presenting content. Your design shouldn’t degenerate its ability to do so.

No I don’t believe Web2.0 sites are oorly desinghed. Just the opposite. If you need to scroll 10 pages at 10px font size then there’s probably too much text. Sometimes less is better.
