Innovative new journalism resource

Two 4th year new media students (Gregor Rohrig and Carly Ritz) recently set up a fantastic new South African journalism resource called Jo’s Toolkit (play on Journalist’s Toolkit).

As Gregor explains:

Jo’s Toolkit is a journalism resource. We have especially targeted the student and grassroot media as potential users for this site. It allows anyone to submit content, to comment on content, to download documents (such as style guides or workshops), with the aim of aiding, stimulating and developing student and grassroot media.

I hope you’ll agree that this is a wonderful intiative and deserves much praise from all the journalism students and practioners that will no doubt use it from all over the country.

PS – Don’t say anything about the lego man (AKA ‘Jo’)… he was my idea!

Are you sick of all this Web 2.0 bullshit?

YoungBLOOD

A new site called bullshitr (not surprisingly in beta) takes a poke at all the new Web 2.0 sites that have sprung up left, right and centre. Use the Web 2.0 Bullshit Generator to generate gobbledy gook and classic buzz phrases such as “syndicate authentic tagclouds” or “reinvent viral weblogs”.

If that doesn’t quench your thirst for revenge on the nerds, you can visit Andrew Woolridge’s Web 2.0 Company Name Generator or visit the Web 2.0 Logo Generator. Funny stuff!

Murdoch’s Message to the Media Industry — It’s MySpace!

A story I recently wrote for the September issue of Intelligence Magazine

Delivering the Annual Livery Lecture at The Worshipful Company of Stationers and Newspaper Makers earlier this year after recently celebrating his 75th birthday, global media tycoon Rupert Murdoch told the old vanguard of publishers and media owners that he was planning a radical re-alignment of his own media empire and that it would be focused around the Internet as it’s core means of distribution. Not erring there, Murdoch conceded that most of the established media heavyweights had completely missed the mark with regards to harnessing the true power of the information age and that this was a fatal error when one compares how well other companies such as Google and Yahoo have done in establishing themselves as successful Web-based media mammoths.

hola2010 – Sunday Times multimedia

hola2010Earlier today the multimedia feature stories that our students produced for the Sunday Times online went live. The theme for this project, which we dubbed hola2010, was based on the upcoming Fifa World Cup which is scheduled to take place in South Africa in 2010.

I think the students have done a phenomenal job and they are very satisfied with the end product. What they have produced has definitely upped the ante for other digital journalism students in South Africa.

Onsite at the Sunday Times

Sunday Times / NML RawSo Vincent and I are in Jo’burg this week, working on a project with our students and the Sunday Times. Basically, we’re producing multimedia for their website and the stories are all themed around preparations for the 2010 World Cup, which as many of you know will be taking place in South Africa. The idea is that our students get some real production experience in Jo’burg and beef up their portfolios, whilst the Sunday Times Online editorial team get a few different perspectives on how to go about producing multimedia for their site. We think it’s a pretty good partnership.

The whole experience is being documented on a blog we set up called NML Raw. Makes some amusing reading…
