Steven van Hemert, the online editor of Blunt Magazine the alternative skating mag, recently told me about the new Mobizine edition they’ve launched. Basically a Mobizine is a java application that runs on your cellphone and updates periodically with text, images, audio and video via a GPRS connection. As Steven describes them “kinda gimmicky, kinda cool…” and it seems like they’re the latest thing that certain magazines and tv channels are getting in to.
When one considers the overall reach that mobile phones have in Africa for example (far more users than pcs), this becomes a potentially ingenious way of delivering instant multimedia content at the fraction of the cost of through other means. People are already becoming accustomed to receiving news alerts and RSS feeds on their cellphones, so why not add visuals and multimedia to the mix?
This is a trend worth following and I look foward to watching it mature…
