The essential rugby world cup companion

As most of you know, the Rugby World Cup in France is now in full swing and the South African Springbok side are looking like strong contenders to lift the William Webb Ellis trophy next month (double fingers crossed).

The Times Rugby Companion For the past couple of weeks I’ve been very involved in putting an application together which aggregates the best of the world cup and makes it easy for rugby fans from all walks of life to follow the proceedings. I’m pleased to say that we launched The Times Rugby Desktop Companion last week and Castle Lager “Back the Boks” immediately came onboard as sole sponsor.

Once installed, the application runs in the background and you’re always one click aways from the latest RWC news, audio interviews, public views, fixtures, team lineups, results as well as a novel live scoring function which allows you to Facebook and monitor the matches simultaneously. Only one thing left to do… go get it!

Ruling on Internet gambling sites likely to impact on online advertising

no_casino.jpg

Lawmakers yesterday approved legislation that aims to regulate internet gambling sites, bars their operators from advertising and compels them to impose limits on clients’ accounts.

In addition, all interactive gambling businesses operating in South Africa will need to obtain a license and host their site within the country.

Moneyweb reported on this proposed legislation a few days ago which places heavy restrictions on Internet gambling sites. The new law still needs to be approved by the National Council of Provinces before the president signs it off, but it is likely to adversely affect the online gambling industry as well as online advertising since substantial revenues are derived from casino and gambling ads.

While this law is a good response to unscrupulous gambling operators and from a government perspective is the socially responsible thing to do, it is definitely a big blow for the local online advertising industry which is still in its infant stages. Just how costly will this really be?

Who else wants to get their hands on an iPod Touch?

ipodtouch.jpg

It’s official. Steve Jobs announced yesterday at a special media event that us non-American Apple fans will finally be able to get our hands on an iPhone without the phone functionality and surplus features. The new iPod Touch takes full advantage of all the R&D that’s gone into the iPhone and looks set to become one of the hottest and most spoken about products of the year.

iPod Touch features for the 8GB & 16GB models: a 3.5-inch touch-screen display, Wi-Fi access with iTunes store support and the Safari Web browser, 22 hours playback, plus its only 8mm thick!
