Google attempts to enter newspaper ad business with QR Codes

Last year I blogged about my work on a type of 2d bar code symbology called “QR Codes” and announced that this work had culminated in the launch of a commercial advertising initiative known as “TimeCode”. Well, it seems that Google has also caught onto the idea.

According to Silicon Valley Insider:

google-barcode.gif Google’s efforts to get into the newspaper ad business have yet to yield much. One tool it hopes will eventually change that: Small, square barcodes, like the one at the right, at the bottom of print ads. When a person scans the barcode with a compatible camera phone, it takes their phone’s browser to a mobile Web address encrypted in the graphic.

From a business sense it’s a bit worrying to have Google entering the same market, but it sure is nice to beat them to something ’cause it doesn’t happen very often! Let the games begin…

The Times website experiences phenomenal growth

I recently did a presentation to a potential blue chip advertiser on The Times and what we had accomplished online over the course of the past 9 months. As part of the presentation, I showed a graph which plotted our growth over the last 12 months according to audited figures released by Nielsen/NetRatings, which the OPA uses to rank its members each month.

Needless to say, the growth has been phenomenal and I thought I would share it here:

That’s a growth rate of 75% over the course of the last 12 months to be precise and I would be over the moon if we could sustain anything close to this for the upcoming year!

Well done to everyone involved and many thanks to all our loyal visitors…

Help Google find Chuck Norris

I usually don’t find these things funny, but this is brilliant.

  1. Go to the Google and type in: “find chuck norris”
  2. Hit the “I’m Feeling Lucky” button
  3. See what happens…

Eskom: The plot thickens

As if the fact that families are left without power on an almost daily basis, businesses are, well, going out of business, the Gautrain project is falling further behind schedule and accusations are flying as to who exactly is to blame for the whole fiasco, the latest revelations that the national ruling-party is actually profiteering off lucrative contracts to supply and build new power stations is a national disgrace and really boils my blood!

According to the M&G:

A consortium that includes ANC investment company Chancellor House has signed another mega contract with Eskom, almost doubling the ruling party’s stake in — and expected profit from — the parastatal’s drive to build new power stations.

Now why am I not suprised?
