2nd Annual New Media Marketing Conference (25-28 March)

There have been many developments within New Media and digital marketing over the last few years. At the moment, the momentum is building – with more and more people using cell phones and with internet access becoming cheaper and easier, the digital market is set to explode.

South African companies are still relatively new and hesitant about alternative marketing strategies, so ride the crest of the wave by attending IQPC’s 2nd Annual New Media Marketing conference. Hear from digital marketing experts from leading organisations on how to gain the competitive edge in today’s digital space.

Tour South Africa on your mobile phone

Well, we’ve all been anticipating the inevitable boom of mobile applications and services in South Africa and there finally seems to be some interesting ideas hitting the mainstream market.

One of the most promising start-ups in my opinion is Mobiguide — a new service which brings virtual video tours of South African cities and landmarks to your phone.

This a fantastic way to interact with the flood of tourists that enter the country each year (especially with 2010 looming) through a device that each and every one of them brings along. I also think it’s a great initiative which SA tourism or local government departments should support and get involved in.

Times/Google Search goes live

A very positive change took place on The Times site last night. We successfully implemented a customised installation of Google Search on the site which replaced the Search 24 engine that had powered it since launch last year, making us the first major media company to partner with Google on site search in South Africa.

This was one of the things that was high up on my agenda since becoming online publisher and although we encountered a few problems along the way (on our side mostly), the technical support and expertise that we received from the local and international Google office was incredible.

I have already received positive feedback from colleagues and readers who are ecstatic about the switch and many of them highlight the fact that they just have a better search experience with Google. This is always a good thing for a publication as content is no good if people can’t find it!

I anticipate that the other Avusa Media titles will follow in the footsteps of The Times shortly…

Who needs television match officials when you have youtube?

Courtesy of The Register:

The Rugby Football Union has banned Bristol lock Gareth Llewellyn for three weeks after he admitted whacking Bath prop David Barnes during Bath’s 19-9 defeat of Bristol on 2 March – an incident rather ill-advisedly posted on YouTube by a delighted Bristol fan. The vid was apparently spotted by Bath supporters and subsequently came to the attention of RFU citing officer Budge Pountney.

In the age where everybody has a camera and may be filming you at any time and any place, spare a thought for what might be going up next on YouTube…
